MISSIONARY CARE
Giving Logo WHAT IS MISSIONARY CARE?
Missionary Care is a network of personal connections between missionaries and College Church Sunday School classes. In other words, a class has at least one missionary family assigned to it.

This gives College Church an opportunity to become personally acquainted with the missionary family and their field of service.

Typically, we send packages, cash gifts, cards, and other remembrances to our assigned missionaries.

In return, we all feel a sense of involvement with the world mission enterprise through regular correspondence from our assigned missionaries, updates from their field, and even through teaching and speaking sessions while our missionaries are on furlough.

The missionaries are encouraged, knowing College Church classes care and pray for them. The relationships built over time personalize names and faces that both the missionaries and their classes value highly.

Betty Gruver BEVERLY GRUVER: Retired
College Church ABSF Assignments: Harvesters, Safe Harbor, Abundant Life Fellowship, Connections.

Beverly was a global missionary with the Church of the Nazarene assigned to Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary located just outside Metro Manila in the Philippines. She was assistant professor of English, primarily teaching English as a second language to speakers of other languages.

Because the common language of the seminary is English, students needed to be able to do graduate level academic work in English. Students come to the seminary from the various countries of the Asia Pacific Region.

Professor Gruver also taught specific courses to help prepare those who hope to use the teaching of English as a ministry tool.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Beverly was the dean of students. She also served as mentor to the single women students. She was in this assignment since January of 1997.

Beverly received Bachelor's degrees from Grace Bible Institute in Omaha, Nebraska, and from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska. She received her master of education degree from the University of Oklahoma and is currently pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Kansas.

Her previous assignments include teaching high school English at Alliance Academy in Quito, Ecuador, South America, and assisting with the pastoral training by extension program in Paraguay, South America.

Bev has seven grandchildren. Ben's family is in Sierra Vista, Arizona and are active in the Nazarene church there. Beth and Jeremy Gulley and their boys are active members of My Father's House in Paola, Kansas. (Beth is the NMI president there). Kara is stationed in North Carolina and sometimes attends a Nazarene Church but often attends a Methodist church near her home.

The Martins

Local Time: Freetown, Sierra Leone

PAUL AND SHARON MARTIN
College Church ABSF Assignments: Affirmers.

The Martins have served as intern missionaries for the Church of the Nazarene in Sierra Leone, West Africa since March 2004. In February 2007 they met with the General Board and were commissioned as global missionaries with the Church of the Nazarene.

Paul graduated from God's Bible School in 1977 with a B.RE. He received a master of divinity degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary in 2003. Sharon graduated from God's Bible School in 1976 with a B.A and she has done graduate studies at the University of Kansas in ESL (English as a Second Language) and at Nazarene Theological Seminary. Paul and Sharon completed a certificate in Cross Cultural Ministry from Nazarene Theological Seminary in December 2003.

Prior to their appointment, the Martins pastored 15 years and then spent 15 years in Kansas City while Paul served in several capacities in editing and management for Beacon Hill Books at Nazarene Publishing House. The last two and a half years of that time, Sharon worked in the World Mission Department at the Headquarters of the Church of the Nazarene.

The Martins' call to missions developed over a period of several years. As they listened to missionary speakers, read the stories of God's call to others, and pursued studies at NTS, they knew God was calling them into cross-cultural ministry. A missions teaching trip to Bucharest, Romania, also deepened their sense of call.

Paul and Sharon are pioneering the work of the Church of the Nazarene in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Paul serves as ministries coordinator for Sierra Leone in the capacities of church development, theological education, pastoral and leadership development and coordinating volunteerism. Sharon has been developing Bible storying as a ministry tool for church planting in Sierra Leone, for pre-evangelism ("stone clearing"), discipleship, teaching Wesleyan Holiness doctrine, church development, and leadership training in the local churches.

The Martins have two grown married children: Stephen and Sherilyn and five grandchildren.

Samuel and Lumae Yangmi

Local Time: Bangkok, Thailand

SAMUEL AND LUMAE YANGMI
College Church ABSF Assignments: New Beginnings, New Covenant, New Promise, Reflections.

The Yangmi's are global missionaries for the Church of the Nazarene in Thailand. They have served there since 1993.

Samuel was born in Burma, the son of a Lisu refugee family. After his family gave him up for adoption at the age of five months due to hardship and their return to Communist China, he was adopted by Christian missionaries.

He and his adoptive parents immigrated to the United States in 1970. They settled in Joplin, Missouri, where he attended high school and later enrolled at Ozark Christian College. He served at a local church as a youth pastor for three years.

In 1976, Samuel went to Thailand to work among the mountain hill tribesmen in Northern Chiang Mai province. While in Thailand, according to Asian custom, he married a Lahu Christian girl, Lumae, in 1978.

After serving in Thailand for four years, The Yangmi's came back to the United States. They attended Mid-America Nazarene College, graduating in 1984. Soon after graduation they returned to Thailand to continue working among the tribal groups using their agri-mission skills helping opium growers find legal means of generating income. Samuel was instrumental in helping the Church of the Nazarene get visas to begin the work in Thailand in 1989.

Samuel is presently serving as the district superintendent of the Northern Thailand District. He was also instrumental in opening new work in northern Myanmar (Burma).

The Yangmi's have four daughters, Nellie, Julie, Samantha, and Anzie.
